2nd Prize for JSWD in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, Germany
During World War II, Stalag 326 Senne was one of the largest prisoner-of-war camps in Germany. The memorial in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock is to be expanded into a site of remembrance of international significance. To this end, the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL) had announced a design competition, the results of which have now been announced.
In addition to the construction of a new entrance building and the restoration of the three original barracks in accordance with historic preservation standards, the competition called for a concept for the outdoor spaces and exhibitions. Above all, the goal was to architecturally convey the site’s function as a distribution center for internees assigned to labor.
In our design, two clearly defined guide walls direct visitors’ paths. They lead from the parking lot into the foyer and from there on to the outdoor area, toward the central storage street. The defining design element of the new building, however, is a large, square roof that unites all of the building’s functions beneath it and lends the structure a striking yet understated identity. At the same time, the exposed wooden grid alludes to the historic, serial organizational system of the former warehouse. The site reveals three states of remembrance: a well-maintained presence, a slow fading, and a quiet forgetting.
The jury awarded JSWD’s concept second prize.
All designs are now on display at the LWL in Münster until august 3rd.
