JSWD and Paul Böhm receive 4th prize
A piece of Jewish history is returning to Hamburg: more than 80 years after its destruction, the synagogue in the Grindelviertel district is to be rebuilt.
Twenty-five planning teams took part in the first phase and eight in the second phase of the Europe-wide building and open space planning competition organized by the Jewish Community in Hamburg.
We are delighted that our concept, which we developed in cooperation with the architectural firm Paul Böhm, has been recognized. The open space planners RMP Stephan Lenzen and, for the supporting structure, the firm werner sobek ingenieure were also part of the design team.
Our design envisages a careful reconstruction of the historic synagogue and the creation of two free-standing structures. The connection to a school creates a striking ensemble. With the widening of the street space at Grindelhof, the community center opens up to the city. Between the buildings, a pleasant square is created, while the rear area is designed as a green garden that serves as a haven of peace.
The designs will be on display at Hamburg City Hall from October 21 to November 10.
