New entrance building and cafeteria at Grugapark Essen
2nd prize competition 2024
Client: City of Essen
Our concept comprises an ensemble of four structures that house cash registers, a shop, and a café. The new arrival point opens up to and connects with the structured landscape of the park, but also fits with the surrounding urban environment. The staggered positioning of the buildings means there is no rear side. The four roofs have different sizes and heights, overlap slightly, and extend well beyond the transparent facades, protecting the interiors and the terraces in front of the buildings from the elements.
A variety of outdoor events can be held on the lawn in front of the new entrance. These events can also utilize the infrastructure of the orangery. The neighboring cube will continue to serve as the location of the Outdoor School and park administration. This existing structure will be restored to its original form and sensitively retrofitted.
The new building will comply with the strictest building standards in order to ensure sustainability. The main structure will be made of wood, which will minimize both gray energy consumption and the weight of the structure itself. Solar modules on the shed roofs will generate solar energy.
