Low-Tech Office Building at Hallesches Ufer, Berlin
1st prize competition 2023
Client: CA Immobilien Anlagen AG
A plot in the heart of an expansive green space. The structure with a square-shaped floor plan maintains generous distances to its current neighbors. To the north, the cubature recedes in opposition to the setback line. This gesture serves to improve the quality of the “blue-green boulevard” comprised of the park and the banks of the Landwehr Canal. This is also where the main entrance is located. The interplay of new and historic buildings together with the ample open space lends the area an extremely welcoming atmosphere.
The heart of the new office building is the central atrium, which serves as a center of communication. From here, the users are split up into rental units via decentralized staircases. The two-story green deck offers thrilling views of the city from the atrium.
The rough, robust exterior of the building is contrasted with its “soft” interior, which is dominated by wood and wood shades that – together with intentionally positioned plants – create a homey atmosphere. With a variety of indoor and outdoor workspaces, the building is designed to meet the needs of the modern world of work.
A green roof with solar panels is just one aspect of the sustainable planning. The building technology was also designed in line with low-tech principles.
