The green shimmering residential building called "Zoll 5" offers final space for 100 micro-apartments and 14 units for shared flats. In the popular Zollstock district, the new building contributes to the creation of sustainable living space in Cologne's city centre through moderate redensification.
The originally heavily sealed outdoor spaces give way to a park-like garden courtyard. The new design continues the development on the street side. The cubic formulation of the building parts in the courtyard area responds to the neighbouring buildings inside the block in terms of location and height. The sawtooth-shaped façade along the street also provides optimal lighting for the flats facing the street.
The materiality and colour of the façade with its ceramic clinker forms a reminiscence of the Cologne architecture of the 1950s and reminds us of the historical use of the site. The building site was the location of the Midinette hat factory from 1948. The neighbouring gable, which is clinkered with brick slips, had the associated advertising mounted on it at the time.
